Freedom is not Free
This monument is dedicated to the men and women who served their country with great pride and honor and had the misfortune to be a prisoners of war.
These members of the armed forces were subject to death marches, exposure to harsh elements, hard labor, torture, solitary confinement, starvation and attempted brain washing.
We thank them for their honorable service.
Barbed wire and bayonet points encircle the american eagle while standing "with pride and dignity. Continually on the alert for the opportunity to seize hold of beloved freedom."
The black granite monument has a polished front and a rough cut back. The base is approximately 4 feet wide and 3 feet deep that tapers to approximately 2 feet wide and 1 foot deep at a height of 6 feet.
The polished front has an explanation of the monument inscribed on it. The rough cut of the sides and back represents the harshness and despair the POW's were subject to in captivity.
The black granite represents the black ribbon flanked by red, white, and blue from which the Ex-POW's medals hang. At the top is a cast bronze replica of the medal awarded to the Ex-POW, the American Eagle encircled by barbed wire and bayonet points. Below it are the 5 branches of service, cast in aluminum.
The Ex-Prisoners of War Monument was dedicated in September 18, 2009 at Memorial Park (66th and Dodge Street) in Omaha, Nebraska.
A new monument walk is being added to the north of the War Memorial at the top of the hill. The Ex-POW monument will be the first to be placed on this walk on honor.
This EX-POW monument was funded entirely by private citizens and corporate donors.
